University of Denver student Cameron Hickert named 2015 Truman Scholar

University of Denver junior Cameron Hickert has been named a 2015 Truman Scholar. Hickert is one of 58 students selected from nearly 700 nominees across the nation and the only student from a Colorado university to receive the award.

Hickert is majoring in physics and international studies, with experience in educational organizations in China and the U.S. He believes in bridging the gaps between theoretical science and practical policy, particularly through the dissemination of nuclear technology to fight cancer.

The Truman Scholarship Foundation awards scholarships for students planning to attend graduate school for a career in government or public service. Each Truman Scholar receives a $30,000 scholarship toward graduate school, as well as special internship opportunities with the federal government. The foundation was established by Congress in 1975 as the federal memorial to President Harry S. Truman. To date there have been 3,023 Truman Scholars.

“It’s a competitive scholarship, and I feel really lucky to be selected as a Truman Scholar,” Hickert says. “I realized it was something that could provide interesting opportunities in line with what I had done at DU and with what I am hoping to do in the future.”

All of the scholars will meet on May 19 for a leadership development program at William Jewell College and will receive their awards in a special ceremony at the Truman Library in Independence, Mo., on May 24.
